Hello everyone in README, we, the "Gang Lam Bak Lam Bon Tour" gang, would like to present a review of a backpacker trip for beginners...wrong plan every minute...being cheated or...a lot...getting lost often...riding a motorbike until our faces are black...going to a nightclub and dancing until we pass out...also getting to do alms giving...must visit famous coffee shops...having to break down the door of a guest house because we lost the key...exciting public transportation...we've even slept on the side of the road in Vientiane...5555

First of all, I would like to warn you that there is a lot of content... but it should be useful for those who are planning to go. As for the beautiful pictures, let's take them and show them off. This trip is all about having fun and being funny, so let me tell you :D

This 5-day, 4-night trip, our route is like this.

Day 1: Bangkok-Udon Thani-Nong Khai-Vientiane (Overnight in Vientiane)

Day 2: Vientiane - Vang Vieng (Overnight in Vang Vieng)

Day 3: Vang Vieng - Luang Prabang (Overnight in Luang Prabang)

Day 4: Luang Prabang - Vientiane (Half a night on the bus, plus half a night sleeping at the fountain square)

Day 5: Vientiane - Nong Khai - Udon Thani - Bangkok

Part 1: Journey from Bangkok-Udon Thani-Nong Khai-Vientiane
**Originally, we were going to take an 8:30 AM flight from Bangkok to Udon Thani, arriving at 9:30 AM. From there, we would take a taxi to the Udon Thani bus terminal to catch the 10:30 AM bus to Vientiane, which would take 3 hours. We would arrive at 1:00 PM, explore the city, eat and drink, and then sleep. Sounds simple, right?**

》》》》But... in reality...《 《《《
- We took a taxi from the airport for 200 baht, 3 people per car, to the bus terminal. When we arrived, the bus was full! The next one was at 2:00 PM, arriving in Vientiane around 6:00 PM. Oh no! We weren't going to wait! So our gang quickly decided to jump on a van to Nong Khai.

- The van from Udon Thani to Nong Khai took 1 hour and cost 50 baht. We told the driver that we were going to the bridge to cross to Laos, and he dropped us off at the bridge for an additional 20 baht each, making it 70 baht in total. We got off at the Thai-Lao border.

- After filling out the border pass at immigration, we took a 15 baht bus for about 5 minutes to the Lao border.

- A two-row car from the border to Vientiane (22 km) takes almost 1 hour. The driver is very relaxed. Bargain for 50 baht per person (12,500 kip/person). If you can't bargain, wait for the green bus to go down to the Saa market. The price is not sure. The one I asked for will be around 7,000 kip (Saa market = wholesale market with Vientiane bus station).

- For those who rent a car, make sure to agree on the price with the driver and where you will be dropped off. Do you know what I mean? We got ripped off and had to pay extra. There were 6 of us, and we each had to pay an extra 50 baht. When we arrived at the hotel, we were charged an additional 100 baht each. T-T

- Passports must be valid for at least 6 months before the expiration date. You can travel to Laos without a visa and stay for a maximum of 30 days at a time.
- People without passports can use a border pass, which can be applied for and is valid for 3 days and 2 nights. However, they cannot travel outside the designated area. For example, if you cross the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge from Nong Khai to Vientiane, you will not be able to travel outside the area. If you are caught traveling outside the area, you will have to pay a fine of at least 100 US dollars.

- At the Lao border, they checked our passports and we bought One Way tickets for 10,000 kip each, which is 41 Thai baht. We then used the tickets to pass through the border, similar to using a card to enter the MRT.

-One way ticket Laos border pass, if you go with many people, combine your passports and buy them at once. The pass does not need to match the passport ID. They don't check.

Chapter 2: Exploring Vientiane

Originally, we planned to drop our bags at the hotel and start exploring the city around 1 pm. We could either walk or rent bikes and cruise around until 6 pm. It sounded easy enough.

But in reality…

- Arrived in Vientiane at 13.30 as planned. Laos and Thailand share the same sun. Traveling in the afternoon heat at 13.30, the sun is so hot that it can burn a buffalo to death. Plus, with the multiple transfers, we were exhausted. It took us until 3 pm to gather the courage to leave the room and eat lunch (it actually only took 15 minutes to pack our bags, but I'll tell you where we went in the next episode).

- As soon as we arrived, the plan to ride a bike was out of the question if we didn't want to get hurt. Cars here normally have to stay on the right side of the road... but... on the roads where cars can pass each other, most of them drive in the middle of the road... It's like a test of courage. They drive very fast and are ready to fight each other all the time. Some roads are one-way, some are two-way, so everyone agreed that if we didn't want to get hurt on the first day, it would be better to rent a car and not get lost. We had time from 3 pm to 6 pm, and after some bargaining, we got it for 500 baht (125,000 kip) from the original price of 1,200 baht. If they don't give you a discount, you can walk away and they'll give in. (This trick works everywhere, haha).
- Haw Pha Kaew (entrance fee 5,000 kip), about 20 baht, but it was closed for renovation so we couldn't go inside.
- Wat Si Saket, the photos are classic and beautiful, you must go (entrance fee 5,000 kip), about 20 baht.
- Wat Si Muang (free), inside the ubosot is the main pillar of the city.
- Pha That Luang (entrance fee 5,000 kip), about 20 baht, arrived late so it was closed and couldn't go inside.
- Patuxai (entrance fee 3,000 kip), about 12 baht, go up to see the view around the city, it's cool.

NOTE: - Various temples and the Great Stupa will be open twice a day, morning 8.00 -12.00 / afternoon 13.00-16.00. Don't miss it!

-VIENTAINE Center, a newly opened market, has been open for over a year. At first, we were going to take a walk at Cam Khong, but the sun at 5 pm wouldn't be as pleasant, so we asked the three-wheeled driver to drop us off here to avoid the sun. There were hardly any people walking around, the air was cool, and we sipped coffee and relaxed.

-Walking to Cam Khong (on the banks of the Mekong River) from VIENTAINE Center takes 15-20 minutes, which is quite a distance. Our group was laughing as we read the Lao language. Government offices here will have French and Lao languages, just so you know.
- Cam Khong (on the banks of the Mekong River) is like a public park on the banks of the river where Vientiane people come to exercise, run, flirt, and chat. If you want to flirt with Lao men, this is the place to be. As you walk along, you will come across a flea market selling clothes similar to the ones in our backyard market at similar prices.

-We walked along the Mekong River for about half an hour and reached our accommodation. Our accommodation is opposite the Chinese temple. The atmosphere there is similar to Khao San Road, with guesthouses full of foreigners, plenty of money exchange places, and supermarkets. The prices are similar to those in Thailand, slightly more expensive because most of the goods are imported from Thailand.

NOTE:
-You can buy things with Thai banknotes, but they will give you change in kip. Thai coins are not accepted. It is better to exchange them for kip for convenience. If you find a place that gives you 250 kip = 1 baht, exchange all your money there. If you are outside Vientiane, the exchange rate will be around 240-247 = 1 baht.

Part 3: Eating and Drinking in Vientiane

- Local Restaurants: If you're in a hurry, avoid these! Laotians are very relaxed. We ordered six dishes and it took over an hour. The taste is similar to Thai food. Som Tum (papaya salad) is amazing at every restaurant, I haven't found a bad one yet. The average price is 60 baht per dish. Laotians don't eat out much because it's much more expensive than cooking at home.

NOTE:

• Khao Piak Sen (Rice Noodle Soup): There will be condiments on the table, including "Nua Powder" or MSG. Please be careful to distinguish the crystals of Nua Powder from sugar. I made that mistake and my hair started falling out!
• Lao food is full of Nua Powder. It makes you thirsty all the time. If you're allergic to MSG, be careful.
• All the condiments are imported from Thailand, which makes Lao food quite a bit more expensive than Thai food.
• Lao Beer is the cheapest option, a large bottle costs around 40 baht.
• On a budget, a meal of rice and water (without any extras like dessert, iced coffee, or other dishes) will cost around 80-100 baht. Plan your budget accordingly.

- **Nighttime Restaurants:** My Lao friend took me to a restaurant where Lao people like to eat. The food was delicious, and the prices weren't as high as in our country. The portion sizes were huge, almost as big as a small table. Don't even think about ordering two or three dishes at once, you might get full.

- **Bar & Restaurant:** This is a chill place with live music playing Thai and Western songs. The young men and women here are attractive, with beautiful skin. Many wear tank tops and sleeveless shirts. People here drink beer like it's water. When drinking with Lao people, they will always ask to "chop" (clink glasses) with you, so be prepared to keep your glass full. However, Lao people are very friendly and welcoming.

-Most of the pubs play Thai music. The young men and women here, no matter how modern the music is, they will sway gently and very politely. When I went in, they were playing "Nang Maeo Yua Sawat" by Hin Lek Fai, and they were still swaying gently as if they were listening to bossa nova. It was very cute.

Episode 4: Sleeping in Vientiane

This trip, we traveled a lot, so we chose to sleep comfortably. We set a budget of 500 baht per person per night.

• The hotel we stayed at was called V Hotel. It's located opposite the Chinese temple on the banks of the Mekong River. It's quite convenient, with a minimart, money exchange, and plenty of food options. At night, there's a market that opens at the end of the Mekong River. In that area, there are guesthouses everywhere, so you can walk in and find one. It's similar to Khao San Road, but with mostly foreigners. Since we had heavy luggage and were lazy to walk around looking for a place, we booked in advance. This room cost 900 baht, including breakfast, hot water, and free Wi-Fi.

Note:

• Another area with a lot of guesthouses near the morning market is the Nam Phou area. You can walk around and choose one.

Episode 5: Vientiane-Vang Vieng Journey

**Originally, we planned to take the first type of minibus, a 24-seater minibus to Vang Vieng, departing at 9:00 AM for 200 baht, from Sudjai Tour near our hotel near Wat Chin.**

-With our relaxed attitude, we decided to take our chances and find a ride on the spot. When we returned to buy tickets, it turned out that the morning round was full, and there was only an afternoon round left! We were shocked! And we found that this car was the best to take us to Vang Vieng comfortably...but...we missed it...hahaaa..

-However, we found a new way. We walked to the guesthouse on the opposite side and found a car leaving Vientiane in the morning. We got a ticket for a VIP bus for 200 baht, departing at 9:30 AM. A tuk-tuk will pick us up from our accommodation to take us to the bus stop. The appointment was at 9:30 AM, but it actually arrived at almost 10 AM. The bus left at 10:30 AM and took 4 hours. There was a stop along the way for us to eat and use the restroom for 15 minutes. The road was a mix of gravel and asphalt. The VIP bus was like a first-class bus in our country. There were a few mosquitoes, which was fun.

-14.30 to Vang Vieng Bus Station. I decided to buy a van ticket to Luang Prabang for tomorrow at the Bus Station. (I'm afraid I'll miss it again) I got a 14.30 round for 110,000 kip (442 baht). The van will pick me up in front of the guesthouse.

-From the bus station, there will be a shuttle bus (free) to take me to Vang Vieng city center. Or I can walk, it's not far, about 10 minutes. The ride takes less than 5 minutes. Then I'll walk to the guesthouse I booked.

Note:

- From Vientiane to Vang Vieng, if you want to travel in the morning, hurry up and buy your tickets in advance, otherwise they will be sold out.

-Bus from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang

Vientiane or back to Udon Thani, you can buy tickets at guesthouses or book through tour desks in the city. The price will not be different or will be cheaper than buying at the bus station. For example, to Luang Prabang, my friends bought tickets at the bus station for 110,000 kip, but at the guesthouse, they only sold them for 90,000 kip.

• Cars in Laos will be delayed a lot. The actual pick-up time will be later than the scheduled time.

40 minutes to 1 hour, the Lao people are patient and call to ask for an answer. ..Wait a minute.. The car to Luang Prabang is scheduled to pick up at 2 pm, but it actually arrives at almost 3 pm.. Great..

Episode 6 Vang Vieng Style
**Originally, we arrived at Blue Lagoon and Tham Poukham around 2:00 PM and chilled by the Song River, floating on tubes and kayaking...**

-We didn't arrive at our accommodation until after 3:00 PM. The sun was scorching hot, and Blue Lagoon closed at 4:00 PM. So we chilled in our room until almost 5:00 PM. It happened to be the sixth lunar month festival, and there were 300 rockets launched, along with music and vendors. We went to check it out, and it was a lot of fun. We watched the rockets with anticipation. Some exploded at the base, some went off course, some soared into the sky, and some crashed into the mountains. It was hilarious.

-We walked along the riverbank and found a super chill spot by the Song River. The water was cool, the music was bumping, and we soaked until we were prunes. 555 We didn't float on tubes or kayak, but just soaking in the water was good enough. 55

• Beer Lao tastes chill, it's true, but don't get too comfortable. It might not seem like you're drunk, but when you stand up… you'll fall right over.

Episode 7: Eating in Vang Vieng

**Originally, after dinner, I was going to continue the party at Sakura Bar, where there were a lot of foreigners.**

- The first restaurant, Ola La 2, served Caribbean seafood pizza for dinner, with selected rice grains, papaya salad from the mouth of the Os, dinosaur omelet, and Nile River shrimp tom yum. It took 2 hours, I didn't read it wrong, 2 hours really. I was so free that I renamed the food lol. From the excitement, I was going to continue partying, but I got sleepy... I lost the mood to continue. I walked around the city once and went back to the hotel to sleep!

-The second restaurant, Som Tum Rabeid, which I heard was famous, ordered three plates of papaya salad, grilled fish, grilled chicken, and sticky rice. It took 1 hour.

Note:

If you're in a hurry, don't go to a restaurant. Buy some pate bread (French bread with filling) or sticky rice with grilled pork or fried beef to eat.

• When you arrive in their hometown, you should eat the local food so that you don't waste your trip.

Episode 8 Vang Vieng Nightlife

Episode 9: Chic trip in Vang Vieng
**Original plan: Rent a motorbike and drive to the Blue Lagoon to chill out, then cycle to Tham Jang for a chic adventure.**

-Look at the entrance, oh my god...it's all gravel...driving every day will make your insides slide...dust everywhere...decided to buy a tour for 200 baht per person to two places, Tham Jang and Blue Lagoon, including the orange bridge fee. Let's just get it over with.

Orange Bridge - Tham Jang These two places are next to each other. To get to Tham Jang, you have to pass the Orange Bridge.
-Orange Bridge Fee: 2,000 kip per person (8 baht) (included in the car rental fee)
-Tham Jang Entrance Fee: 15,000 kip (60 baht) Inside is a large cave with nothing beautiful because the stalactites and stalagmites are all dead. Plus, some parts are covered with plaster. But the view from above is beautiful and worth the money. Come early in the morning when there are fewer people. It's more enjoyable.

NOTE:
- When buying a tour, be sure to ask what is included and how much it costs. If you are going to two places in half a day, you should be able to negotiate a price of 200 baht per person. Don't just walk away and find a new place, because they will just put you in a group with other people and won't take you there alone or as a group. This trick works everywhere in Laos.

- The entrance to the Blue Lagoon is 7km away on a dirt road with lots of dust. It's worth investing in a tour so you don't burden your children and grandchildren. The bridge crossing fee is 5,000 kip (20 baht) per person and the entrance fee for foreigners is 10,000 kip (40 baht), for a total of 60 baht per person.

- Life jacket/tube rental 10,000 kip per person (40 baht)

- It is not advisable to ride a motorcycle or bicycle to the Blue Lagoon. The entrance is a bumpy dirt road, far from being a relaxing ride. It is dangerous because large vehicles here never give way to smaller vehicles and are always ready to fight.

Note:

- There are many guesthouses here. If you are diligent, you can walk in and find a room at a reasonable price! 500-900 is a good price, choose what you are comfortable with.

Episode 11: Vang Vieng - Luang Prabang

*Originally, I decided to buy a bus ticket to Luang Prabang at the bus station (for fear of missing out again). I got the 2:30 pm round for 110,000 kip (442 baht). The bus will pick me up in front of the guesthouse.

• Buses from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang, Vientiane, or back to Udon Thani can be purchased at guesthouses or booked through tour desks in town. The prices are not much different, or even cheaper than buying at the bus station. For example, to go to Luang Prabang, we bought tickets at the bus station for 110,000 kip, but at the guesthouse, they sold them for only 90,000 kip.

- Cars in Laos will be delayed a lot. The actual pick-up time will be 40 minutes to 1 hour later than the scheduled time. Laotians are very relaxed. If you call to ask, you will get the answer that

...Just a little bit...The car to Luang Prabang was scheduled to pick us up at two in the afternoon, but it actually arrived at almost three.

Note:

- Luang Prabang is located in the northern part of Laos. The road to get there is a steep and winding mountain road that is very dangerous. There are S-curves, Z-curves, C-curves, and infinity curves. It's even worse than going to Mae Hong Son. It takes more than 3 hours to get from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang. The car must be fairly new and the driver must be familiar with the road. There are no shoulders or any safety features at all. There are also cars parked on the side of the road. If you're thinking of renting a car and driving yourself, forget it!

- The scenery on both sides of the road is incredibly beautiful and magnificent. I love it!

Episode 12 Luang Prabang Eat for Fun
-Luang Prabang buffet at the black market The entrance to the walking street 15,000 kip per person (60 baht) can be scooped once. The food is like a porridge shop. The taste is heavy on the seasoning. It's not delicious. It's strange. Just eat for fun.

• The most popular coffee shop in Prazan, located by the Mekong River, costs less than 100 baht for a million views. Relax with rice porridge with egg, 1 Ovaltine, and 1 plate of fried dough for only 45 baht.

Episode 13 Lifestyle...Luang Prabang style..
-At 5:30 am, the monks will walk in a line for alms.
-The morning market here is beautifully arranged. It's a pleasure to walk around. The vendors are friendly, always smiling, and very cute.
-Live life slowly, don't rush or panic.

Episode 14: The Way of the Young Bikers in Luang Prabang

- Kuang Si Falls is located 22km from the city center. It takes about 1 hour to get there by motorbike. The road is paved and the climb is not too steep. The entrance fee is 20,000 kip (80 baht). Open from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

- Wat Xieng Thong, entrance fee 20,000 kip (80 baht), open 8:00-16:00

- Royal Palace Museum, Luang Prabang. Entrance fee 30,000 kip (120 baht). Open 8:00-17:30.

-The city center is free, beautiful and truly a world heritage site.

Chapter 15: Luang Prabang's Nightlife Entertainment

Nightclubs in Luang Prabang:

Based on information from local vendors, there are three main nightclubs in Luang Prabang:

1. "Suva City Entertainment" (Crazy dancing + live Lao music + occasional EDM) Entrance fee: 30,000 kip (120 baht) per person, includes a free bottle of Lao beer. The atmosphere is like an old-fashioned cafe. We went here and danced like crazy, it was so much fun and tiring! We were drenched in sweat from all the cardio. 55

2. "Dao Fa Disco" A popular spot for young Laotians, playing EDM music similar to clubs back home.

3. "Utopia Nightclub" A popular spot for foreigners, also playing EDM music.

Note:

• All clubs in Laos close at 11:30 PM. There are no after-hours options, so finding food after 10 PM can be difficult. We walked around town looking for food, and let me tell you… it was a struggle.

Episode 16 Luang Prabang, where you sleep and sleep

**We arrived in Luang Prabang at 6 pm, dropped off our bags and went for a walk. Tha Heua Me Guest House, $30 per night without breakfast, is in a great location. It's close to the popular Praxay Cafe, on the banks of the Mekong River, and within walking distance of the night market and morning market. It also offers free Wi-Fi, hot water, and air conditioning. But wait, there's more...* *

- After getting off the bus, I walked around and got lost!!...55+ It took me a while to find it. If I hadn't stopped to exchange money, it would have been a long way... No one knew Souliyavongsa Road!! 555+ This is not the end of it, you know.

- After a night out in the city of Zua, we danced until we were drenched in sweat. When we walked back to our accommodation, we found the door closed and had to knock to be let in.

..not yet..

- When I stopped at the door of the room, I found that there was no key!!...lost!!...I searched everywhere and couldn't find it until almost two o'clock. I knocked on the door and called the caretaker. It turned out that the key I lost was the last one and there was no spare key for this door. The owner was very kind and let me sleep in a new room. We slept in it all sweaty, and he didn't charge us extra. In the morning, the technician had to change the doorknob. Sometimes I feel honored to be the last one to hold that key. 555+ I paid 500 baht for the key.

NOTE:

- You don't need to book accommodation in advance when you come to Luang Prabang. There are so many guesthouses that you can just choose one on the spot. It's harder to find a local house than a guesthouse!

Return Home + Special Episode: Luang Prabang-Vientiane Merry Bus
**Originally...we planned to leave Luang Prabang at 8pm, taking 11 hours to reach Vientiane at 6am, just in time to eat and cross the border to Nong Khai, then continue by car to Udon Thani, stop by Central to cool off, and then head to the airport when it's close. Sounds easy and smooth, right? ..Wait a minute..

-The 8pm bus is full! Got the 5pm bus, but that's not all
-Booked through an agent, viva tour, we booked a bus for 25 seats, but when we actually got on, we got a huge bus.
-When we got on the bus, the first thing the staff gave us was 2 plastic bags. When asked why, they replied...to put your vomit in...boom!!..
-The way back from Luang Prabang to Vientiane is very scary, it runs along the edge of a mountain, with a mountain on one side and a cliff on the other. There is no shoulder and nothing to stop you, so if you're a new driver, you're likely to fall off the mountain. It's a thrilling ride all the way for 11 hours, you can't sleep at all. It's the most exciting bus ride I've ever had. S-curves, Z-curves, C-curves, they're all here. And that's not all
-After driving for a while, the luggage compartment of the bus opened and things fell out. The busboy had to walk back three kilometers to pick them up. Meanwhile, an aunt wearing a sarong got off the bus and peed by the side of the road while waiting.
-Soon after, the vomiting extravaganza will begin around you, just as the bags were handed out as a threat. Most of the people who get carsick are Laotians, while Thais and foreigners sit still, each with their headphones on (to drown out the sound of vomiting 55)
-The buses here are very indie, sometimes they just stop by the side of the road without any notice. We just sit there and wonder what's going on.

And then something we hadn't planned for happened: the bus arrived at Vientiane's Northern Bus Station earlier than expected, at 2:30 AM.

2:30 AM?! What do we do now?!

Luckily, we met a Thai guy who had been here before. We hired a tuk-tuk from the Northern Bus Station to the city center, hoping to find a guesthouse near the fountain. We knocked on two doors, but they were both full. Oh well, only three more hours to go! So we decided to wait there until almost 6:00 AM, sleeping outdoors by the fountain. There were free bathrooms and even outlets to charge our phones. Open-air sleeping next to the Ibis Hotel, how fancy! 55

At 5:30 AM, we walked from the fountain to the Talat Sao market, about 15 minutes away. We got lost again, as usual, 55… We kept asking for directions until we reached Talat Sao.

At Talat Sao, we found some food to eat in front of the market. We had khao piak sen, the cheapest in Laos at 5,000 kip (20 baht). We sat and ate it on the side of the road, 55.

We hired a tuk-tuk from Talat Sao to the Nong Khai immigration checkpoint for 50 baht each. We made a new friend, a doctor, and we chatted for a while and became close… but we never learned his name, 55. Nice to not know you…

We took a connecting bus from the Lao checkpoint to the Thai checkpoint in Nong Khai for 20 baht.

We then hired a car from the Nong Khai checkpoint to the Nong Khai bus terminal for 50 baht each.

We took a van from Nong Khai to Udon Thani for 50 baht each.

We stopped to eat lunch with air conditioning at Central Udon Thani.

We took a taxi from the Udon Thani bus terminal to the airport for 200 baht per car (5 people).

We arrived in Bangkok safely.

Yay!

Note:

• The Udon Thani bus terminal does not have showers, but the Nong Khai bus terminal does. If you want to shower, do it in Nong Khai.

• If you arrive early and are tired, the Udon Thani bus terminal has hourly rooms available for 200 baht per room. The name is P&MO.
