Hello everyone, in this review, SOtraveler will take you to discover a Japanese restaurant that I recently had the opportunity to try. It is called:

TATSUMI JAPANESE CUISINE

Tatsumi Bangkok, located in the Pathumwan Princess Hotel in Bangkok, is a new restaurant that has quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality ingredients and authentic Japanese cuisine. Despite being a relatively new establishment, the restaurant's owner, Jackie, brings a wealth of experience from her previous ventures in the shabu-shabu and Chinese restaurant industry.

Driven by the desire to bring authentic Japanese cuisine to Bangkok at an accessible price point, Tatsumi was born. The restaurant's name, meaning "dragon," symbolizes its ambition to become a culinary powerhouse. Founded by Chef Tanaka, a former chef at the Japanese Embassy in Thailand, Tatsumi offers a taste of Japan without the hefty price tag, making it a perfect destination for both special occasions and casual dining.

The restaurant's interior design evokes a warm and inviting Japanese atmosphere, with a color palette dominated by brown and red hues.

The allure of Japanese cuisine: An immersive dining experience

The restaurant's ambiance exudes a sense of sophistication, with seating arrangements catering to both intimate gatherings and larger groups. The presence of a bar counter, a hallmark of Japanese dining, adds a unique touch. The chef's culinary artistry, on full display behind the counter, becomes an integral part of the dining experience. This fusion of culinary expertise and visual engagement elevates the act of dining into an immersive experience, enhancing the enjoyment of each dish.

The walls are adorned with lanterns, paintings, and Chinese calligraphy, which are commonly found in Japanese restaurants.

The paintings chosen by TATSUMI Bangkok to decorate the restaurant are beautiful and captivating, inviting viewers to linger and admire them.

Where should we sit?

Today, I will be trying 7 different dishes.

This is a 7-course introductory menu that we highly recommend everyone to try.

Let's start with Omakase Sashimi.

Omakase is a dining experience where the chef selects the dishes, similar to a "chef's choice" menu. This style of dining is particularly popular in Japanese cuisine. When dining at an omakase restaurant, the chef is typically highly experienced and trusted by the diners to curate a unique and memorable meal. Diners eagerly anticipate the chef's selections, embracing the element of surprise and the opportunity to savor dishes chosen by the chef's expertise.

The Omakase Sashimi 5 menu features a selection of five freshly sliced sashimi, chosen by the chef. The set I received included salmon, kampachi, fatty tuna, red tuna, and saba.

Serving sashimi requires the use of truly fresh ingredients. The first bite reveals the quality of the ingredients, making it a unique culinary experience. Some prefer to pair sashimi with wasabi and soy sauce, while others enjoy it plain, reflecting individual preferences and diverse culinary tastes.

Tatsumi Roll is the signature dish of the restaurant. Jackie jokingly said that since the restaurant's name is Tatsumi, which means dragon, they wanted to create a signature dish that reflects the name. However, it is impossible to find dragon meat or any part of a dragon to make a signature dish. Therefore, they came up with the idea of creating a dish that resembles a dragon. The Tatsumi Roll is made with shrimp head, eel meat, and salmon roe, arranged on a plate to resemble a dragon.

The Exquisite Tatsumi Roll: A Culinary Masterpiece

The Tatsumi Roll is a culinary masterpiece that tantalizes the taste buds with its unique combination of flavors and textures. The star of the show is the perfectly grilled Japanese eel, boasting an enticing aroma and a succulent, flavorful exterior enhanced by a rich Japanese sauce. As you bite into the roll, the delightful crunch of salmon roe adds a burst of texture and a subtle briny note. The inner layer reveals a delectable surprise: a crispy, panko-crusted shrimp tempura that harmonizes perfectly with the other ingredients, creating a symphony of flavors in every bite. This exquisite combination of textures and tastes makes the Tatsumi Roll a true "TATSUMI Signature" dish, a must-try for any discerning food lover.

The Omakase Sushi is a set menu of nigiri sushi, featuring fresh seafood paired with seaweed, offered by TATSUMI restaurant. The chef selects different fish each day, ensuring a unique dining experience. The sushi is served in seven layers, carefully arranged to enhance the flavor profile. Each bite offers a distinct and delightful taste, showcasing the freshness of the ingredients.

The next menu item is Kurobuta pork. Kurobuta pork is known for its tenderness and its evenly distributed marbling. The specific breeding methods used for Kurobuta result in a higher price point compared to regular pork, but it is also highly sought after.

The Kurobuta Akamiso dish features Kurobuta pork, known for its tenderness and marbling, grilled to perfection. The savory Akamiso sauce adds a rich depth of flavor to each bite.

Dobin Mushi: A Delightful Japanese Soup Experience

Dobin Mushi is a traditional Japanese soup dish served piping hot in a charming individual teapot. The warm broth soothes the throat and awakens the senses with its delicate aroma of freshly squeezed lemon. This seafood-based soup is a true culinary gem, offering a delightful combination of flavors and textures that will leave you wanting more.

The Kani Dashimaki Tamako is a Japanese-style crab omelet. It is served hot and steaming, and it is surprisingly comforting to eat. The highlight of this dish is the sweet egg, which tastes like a warm hug from your mother's home cooking.

To conclude the meal, we had a green tea mochi. I think the special thing about this mochi is its ordinariness. It's just a plain mochi with brown sugar syrup, no filling inside. It's a simple, chewy dessert that's not extraordinary, but it was a perfect way to end our Japanese meal.
