After reading and following many reviews, there is one place that we think is a must-visit. Not only is it beautiful, but it is also only about three hours from Bangkok. This makes it the perfect place to escape the city and enjoy some stunning scenery.

Let's go!

Let's embark on our journey, departing from Bangkok on a Friday evening. This timing allows us to avoid the early morning rush while ensuring our arrival at Koh Kham among the first visitors. Although ferries depart every 1-2 hours, reaching the island early is crucial as only 400 tourists are permitted daily.

Upon arriving in Sattahip on Friday evening, we checked into a boutique hotel, approximately 30 kilometers from the pier. We indulged in a delicious dinner and enjoyed a comfortable night's sleep. The following morning, around seven o'clock, we embarked on our journey to Koh Kham.

It took us about an hour to drive from our accommodation to the naval base. We had to park our car there for a fee of only 10 baht. Then we bought ferry tickets for 300 baht each. A songthaew then took us to the pier.

The majority of tourists on the boat were Thai, and most brought their own lunch, as we would be spending the entire day on the island. This type of travel experience is unique to this island and cannot be found on other islands like Koh Samui or Koh Tao.

After approximately 30 minutes, we will arrive at this island paradise. From here, we must transfer from the ferry to a smaller boat, as the ferry is too large to dock at the island.

A small boat will take us to the other side of Koh Kham, which is relatively quiet and uncrowded. (Honestly, I'd like to stay here a little longer.) However, the boat staff instructed us to follow the path to the other side of the island, urging us to be cautious while walking. Don't get too caught up in admiring the scenery, or you might fall.

The

Upon arrival at Koh Kham, we may wonder what activities are available. However, before exploring the possibilities, it is crucial to understand the restrictions in place. As the island falls under the jurisdiction of the Royal Thai Navy, strict measures are implemented to preserve the marine ecosystem.

  • Littering on the island is strictly prohibited. (Although, it is observed that this regulation is not always adhered to.) - This is a challenging issue to address, particularly with the increasing number of tourists visiting the island.

Officials informed us that this area was once pristine, but due to the influx of tourists, the ecosystem has been damaged. Therefore, it is commendable that the number of daily visitors is restricted.

  • Be responsible for the activities you participate in.
  • If you wish to swim or kayak, life jackets must be worn at all times.
  • Respect the site (we did not observe anyone wearing swimsuits or bikinis).

Let's explore the exciting activities available on the stunning Koh Kham island:

  • Bring your own food and dispose of waste responsibly.
  • Alternatively, a small convenience store offers cooked meals for purchase.
  • Embark on a scenic hike to the eastern side of the island for breathtaking views.

  • Kayaking and snorkeling equipment are available for rent.

  • Relaxing on the beach, soaking up the sun and admiring the beauty of the sea is another way to experience pure bliss.

In conclusion, we arrived at the island around 9:30 am and had to return by boat at 1:00 pm. This meant that we only had a few hours to spend on the island. Although we did not want to leave, we had to return when the time came.

The last boat departs at 4:00 PM, and overnight stays on the island are strictly prohibited.

I must really go now.

How to get to Koh Kham?

If you are driving yourself, we can recommend the route we took to explore the area. However, if you are traveling by van or bus, we recommend that you go to Pattaya and then take a connecting bus to Sattahip. Alternatively, you can rent a car or motorbike to Sattahip and go to Khao Ma Jor Pier. This is probably the best route. If you are driving, take Sukhumvit Road and Highway 3. You can also ask Google Maps, as we did. Don't forget to ask Google!
