Chapter 4: Crystal-clear, cool water, where fish can be seen.

Continuing our journey, after visiting four temples in one day, on the third day of our trip to Japan, we set our sights on exploring Arashiyama, Nonomiya Shrine, Togetsukyo Bridge, Tenryuji Temple, the Bamboo Forest, and Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion). While it may seem like a long list, several locations are clustered together. In reality, we only traveled to two distinct areas.

The journey begins as usual from OSAKA station, heading towards Kyoto station. No need for further explanation here. As before, upon arrival at Kyoto station (before proceeding to the next station, it is recommended to purchase a bus ticket first, then continue your journey), you will need to change trains to reach Arashiyama station. Here are some helpful tips for your train journey:

The website we mentioned earlier provides information on train lines. You can search for the train schedule and route. We will be taking the JR Sagano Line and getting off at Saga Arashiyama Station. Upon exiting the station, turn left and walk straight towards the crowd. While the directions may seem confusing, don't worry, just follow the crowd.

Upon exiting the station, follow the crowd. We initially chose the left path and continued walking without a specific destination in mind. We explored whatever caught our attention along the way. To avoid confusion for future visitors, we recommend taking a picture of the directional signs at the station exit and then heading left.

When we split to the left, there were people walking to the right, but most people were going left, so we decided to follow them. Oh, I wanted to mention that when we exited Saga Station, we noticed a local station on our right. This station is recommended for the Romantic Train line, especially during the cherry blossom or snow season. It's the Sagano Romantic Train that runs along the Hozu River, offering stunning views of the changing leaves and cherry blossoms in season. However, we had several other destinations to visit that day, so we didn't take the train. If you plan to visit, I recommend dedicating a full day to explore the area and make sure to book your tickets in advance as it gets crowded.

Continuing on, when we go to the left, there will be a small path. Walk straight ahead, and you will pass by their houses. After walking for a while, it is recommended to walk to the left.

Where did everyone go when we were walking around confused?

The first temple we encountered charged an entrance fee, so we admired it from afar. As we continued our journey, we marveled at the vibrant foliage lining both sides of the road.

After admiring the temple, we walked out to the bridge. Turning right upon exiting the temple, we continued straight ahead until we reached a bridge known as the "overflow weir." The view from the bridge was stunning, with lush greenery and a serene atmosphere.

Before reaching the bridge, we were confused and stumbled upon this restaurant. We stopped by for a quick bite, but it wasn't to our liking.

After we know the starting point, we turn right out of the temple and continue straight ahead. We will come across a bridge where we can rest and relax before continuing to other destinations.

At the bridge, two paths diverge. The left path, named "Nature Trail," offers scenic views, while the right path leads to the temple and bamboo forest.

At that time, we decided to walk on the right side because we were going to the bamboo forest. As we walked, there were signs indicating the way. Along the way, we passed a very large park. To get through, we ended up in the bamboo forest.

The bamboo forest was crowded when we arrived, as many tourists had already arrived. If you want to experience the bamboo forest in solitude, it is highly recommended to arrive very early. As we walked through the forest, we encountered several temples that charged an entrance fee. We did not visit any of the temples during our visit. Additionally, there were boats available for rent to enjoy the natural scenery, but we did not use this service. We also saw carts available for hire.

Upon exiting the bamboo forest, you will encounter temples along the path that require an entrance fee (approximately 500 yen). If you choose not to enter, there is a nearby shrine dedicated to love where you can offer prayers. It is recommended to visit the shrine for good luck. As we continued our journey, we had to move on to our next destination (apologies, no photos were taken).

Upon exiting the bamboo forest, we found ourselves back at the entrance sign. This is because we had entered from the back, not the front. After leaving, we came across a small bento shop, where we stopped for a quick bite before returning to the station we had arrived at. We needed to continue our journey to another destination.

After exiting Saga Station on the JR Saga Arashiyama Line, we boarded a train on the opposite platform heading back one station. We disembarked at JR Emmachic Station to catch a bus to Kinkakuji michi, the stop for Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion) (Kinkakuji Temple, Shogun). The temple was truly magnificent.

Upon exiting the station, turn right and walk straight until you reach an intersection. Cross the street to the left side, where you will find a bus stop with a large crowd waiting. The bus you need is the 205. Remember to purchase a bus ticket before boarding. Your destination stop is Kinkakuji michi.

Upon reaching the disembarkation point, we proceeded to the Golden Temple. As usual, an entrance fee was required. Upon entering, we were directed along a designated path leading to the most scenic viewpoint of the Golden Temple, which was also the most crowded area. After passing the peak, we continued to explore and appreciate the surrounding atmosphere from other perspectives.

As the golden hour bathes the temple in its warm glow, it signals the approach of dusk. We bid farewell to the serene ambiance and embark on our return journey to Osaka. Exiting the temple grounds, we traverse the street to reach the bus stop. Alighting the same bus, we retrace our steps to Emmachic Station. From there, we descend to Kyoto, where we connect to Osaka.

The return journey is similar to the one in Thailand. You return from the same side you arrived on and disembark at the same point. This concludes the day's activities. Make the most of it.

If you don't return too late, you can visit the Namba area for another day, depending on your preference, before checking into your accommodation. A recommendation before finishing is to spend one day in Saga, as there are many interesting places to visit, especially the Romancecar train line.
