Oskar Bistro Bangkok

Made in Thailand Promotion

August 17-26, 2017

Hello!

After speaking with Jeremy, I learned that the establishment has been open since 2011. Chef Julian, who has nearly 20 years of experience working in Michelin-starred kitchens in France, oversees the restaurant's menu. This demonstrates the restaurant's commitment to food, which is on par with its beverage offerings. It's true that many people perceive the restaurant as more of a pub or bar, and the recent renovation of the second floor has enhanced this perception. However, the restaurant is eager to showcase its culinary prowess through this special food promotion, offering a curated menu at promotional prices.

Chef Julien, with over a decade of experience in Thailand, has witnessed the evolution of the country's culinary scene, particularly the improvement in the quality of ingredients. Inspired by this, he has meticulously crafted a special French menu featuring premium Thai ingredients sourced from various regions.

1. Portobello mushrooms and celeriac from the Royal Projects.
2. Live squid and blue crab from Pla Organic.
3. Free-range, premium-grade chicken from Khon Kaen open farms.
4. 100% Arabica coffee beans from Pimacoff, grown in Chiang Mai at an altitude of over 1,200 meters above sea level.
5. Bananas from Go Organics.
6. Chalong Bay Rum, an award-winning Thai rum made from premium sugarcane juice in Phuket. This is a true "farm-to-table" experience. All of this is the inspiration behind our Made in Thailand promotion.

This review is special because we get to see it before the actual promotion starts, which will be from August 17-26, 2017. We will be seated in a private room in the newly built zone, which is decorated in a cool industrial style and can accommodate almost 20 people.

Distinguished by its exceptional beverages, the establishment welcomes guests with a signature cocktail known as

‘Thaipirinha Cocktail’
A refreshing and potent cocktail made with Bay Rum, lemongrass, and lime. It's easy to drink and provides a relaxing sensation.

Let's start tasting the special menu for this promotion.

Fresh Goat Cheese Soufflé, Lychee Caramel Tile
This small, light appetizer features goat cheese made in Thailand, which is particularly impressive.

The adorable soufflé arrived piping hot, and its aroma and flavor belied its small size. The creamy fragrance was particularly prominent, and the texture was incredibly smooth and soft. Paired with the crunchy, sweet accompaniments, it was a perfect harmony of flavors. The fresh cheese was also fragrant and smooth, making for an easy-to-eat appetizer. This was a truly delicious way to whet the appetite.

Sparkling Wine – Domaine Pinon Vouvray Brut (Traditional Method, aged on lees for 20 months) N.V.

Bread and butter

The bread boasts a crispy crust and an incredibly chewy interior, with an alluringly fragrant aroma. The accompanying butter, while lacking a distinct flavor, enhances the richness of the texture, perfectly complementing the bread. Notably, this butter is proudly produced in Thailand.

Blue swimming crab with French-style celeriac rémoulade, topped with crunchy peanuts and creamy crab bisque mayonnaise.
Price: 295++ Baht (348 Baht net)

Generous portion size with a visually appealing presentation. The crab meat is generously sprinkled on top, resting on a bed of celery and coleslaw tossed in a special crab mayonnaise dressing. The dish is further enhanced with coarsely ground, fragrant peanuts and a rich, flavorful seafood bisque. The combination of ingredients creates a harmonious balance of textures and flavors, emphasizing a smooth and delicate experience.

Grilled cuttlefish with a rich tomato ragout and lightly charred eggplant caviar served on black ink.
Price: 310++ Baht (365 Baht net)

The squid was cut into large, thick pieces that were incredibly tender and not at all chewy. It was coated in a fragrant tomato sauce that was sweet, sour, and salty, similar to spaghetti sauce but with a richer and more complex flavor. The dish was also served with a black squid ink sauce and a smooth, roasted eggplant sauce that had a strong aroma and distinct flavor, both of which complemented the squid perfectly.

The chef expertly prepared the squid tentacles, deep-frying them to a golden crisp. The light batter, seasoned to perfection, enhanced the natural flavors of the seafood. Paired with the accompanying sauce, this dish was a culinary delight.

White Wine – Domaine de Begude Chardonnay Etoile (Organic) 2015

Organic Thai brown rice with free-range chicken breast, meaty Portobello mushroom, and a rich coffee-infused sauce.
Price: 420++ Baht (495 Baht net)

The dish offers a generous portion of both chicken and rice. The chicken breast is thick and juicy, cooked to perfection with a tender texture. The subtle seasoning allows the natural flavors to shine through. The bed of brown rice is fluffy and chewy, providing a satisfying base for the dish. The portobello mushroom is thick and incredibly smooth, boasting a rich, earthy flavor. The star of the show is the unique coffee sauce, which is incredibly fragrant and boasts a deep, well-rounded flavor that perfectly complements every element on the plate.

Red Wine – Domaine Des Enfants Le Jouet (Carignan Blend), Cotes Catalanes (Organic) 2015

Banana tarte flambé with rum, served with creamy banana ice cream and toasted coconut flakes
Price: 180++ Baht (212 Baht net)

A tarte tain banana flambéed by the chef, with a perfect thickness and a satisfying crunch. The banana itself is fragrant, sweet, and soft, with a distinct flavor. Served with banana ice cream that is not as cold as regular ice cream, but rather has a slight chill and a pronounced, smooth banana flavor. It is only slightly sweet, which is unusual but pleasant. The dish is finished with toasted coconut flakes, adding a delightful aroma and crunch.

Flambéed Lemongrass

The restaurant's Western-style atmosphere, despite being adapted for more sit-down dining, retains the casual and friendly bar vibe that is a hallmark of Oscar Bistro Bangkok. The Made in Thailand promotion is a wise decision by the restaurant to raise awareness of its culinary offerings. Based on my experience, each dish on the menu has a distinct and unique flavor that creates a memorable dining experience. The dishes are enjoyable, easy to understand, and, most importantly, delicious, especially considering the special pricing. Furthermore, it is a source of pride for Thais to have access to premium, naturally grown, and chemical-free ingredients. Even foreign chefs recognize the value of these ingredients, so why wouldn't we, as Thais, support them? Come and experience the exquisite flavors of Thai ingredients through French-style cuisine from August 17th to 26th, 2017.

Thank you very much.
