Paying a few hundred baht for millions of views, we believe that many people have a favorite tourist destination that they intend to visit at least once in their lifetime. For us, Ban Pa Pong Piang is one of the places on the list that we must visit before we die (a bit exaggerated, haha!). When it comes to terraced rice fields, many people might think of Sapa or Mu Cang Chai in Vietnam. In fact, Thailand also has beautiful terraced rice fields.

Nestled in the Mae Chaem district of Chiang Mai, Ban Pa Bong Piang village is a picturesque haven embraced by cascading rice terraces. Home to the Pga K'nyaw people, this village exudes a serene charm with its simple agrarian lifestyle. The allure of nature draws tourists in droves, eager to immerse themselves in the village's tranquil ambiance. As dusk descends, the sky transforms into a canvas of vibrant hues, with the setting sun casting golden rays across the rolling hills, creating a breathtaking spectacle that leaves one yearning to freeze time.

The recommended time to visit is divided into three periods:

The rice planting season (from July to late August) is the time when rice is planted. Farmers transplant rice seedlings into flooded paddy fields, creating a beautiful reflection of the sky in the water.

The lush green rice fields (from late August to mid-October) are a sight to behold. The vibrant green rice plants fill the fields, creating a breathtaking panorama. The verdant landscape offers a sense of tranquility and rejuvenation, attracting numerous visitors during this period.

The golden rice fields (from mid-October to early November) are the time when the rice plants start to turn golden yellow, ready for harvest. This is another beautiful period, as the terraced rice fields are ablaze with a golden hue, as if the entire field has been bathed in gold.

Nestled amidst the lush greenery, Baan Pa Pong Piang is a quaint hamlet with a population of less than 10 households. The residents, predominantly Christian, have collectively transformed their homes into homestays, welcoming tourists with open arms. This unique initiative has propelled the village into the limelight, attracting both leisure travelers and avid photographers.

For those seeking an immersive experience in nature and the grandeur of terraced rice fields, affordable options start at just 500 baht per night per person, including three meals. While electricity is unavailable, mobile phone signals are accessible. Overnight accommodations can be booked directly with the village.

Traveling to Ban Pa Pong Piang

For those traveling by private car: From the city center, drive straight to Chom Thong District. Then turn up Doi Inthanon and continue driving straight until you reach the second checkpoint. Turn left at the first intersection to head towards Huay Sai Luang Waterfall, which is the parking point and pick-up/drop-off location for tourists visiting Baan Pa Bong Piang (round-trip transportation to Baan Pa Bong Piang starts at 700 baht per trip). It is highly recommended to take the accommodation's vehicle for transportation due to the challenging road conditions. The route consists of red clay, water puddles, and potential for getting stuck in potholes. Additionally, the uphill climb poses significant risks and dangers for self-driving.

For those who do not travel by private car: Take a yellow car to Chom Thong District (approximately 35 baht/person), then take another yellow car to Mae Chaem District (approximately 70 baht/person). Choose to get off at Checkpoint 2 of Doi Inthanon or Mae Pan Waterfall Junction. Then, arrange for a car from your accommodation to pick you up.
