We booked accommodation in the heart of Chiang Mai, La Pillow 8. We chose this place because it is centrally located, with access to red taxis and close proximity to important landmarks such as Wat Chedi Luang and others. It is also near the morning market, allowing for a leisurely morning stroll. From there, we can walk to Tha Pae Gate, the entrance to Chiang Mai city.

Wat Chedi Luang: A Historical Landmark in Chiang Mai

Wat Chedi Luang is an ancient temple in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Built during the reign of King Saen Muang Ma, the 7th ruler of the Mangrai dynasty, its exact construction date remains unknown. However, estimates place its construction between 1928 and 1945 CE.

As a royal temple of the ancient Lanna Kingdom, Wat Chedi Luang has undergone numerous renovations throughout its history. Notably, the main stupa, currently measuring 60 meters wide, stands as one of the most significant religious structures in Chiang Mai.

Situated in the heart of Chiang Mai, Wat Chedi Luang was once the administrative center of the Lanna Kingdom. Today, the temple complex houses various religious and cultural artifacts, including the Chedi Luang stupa, the Inthakin pillar, the Bodhi tree, and the Kumphan and Rishi statues. These elements reflect the evolving cosmology and beliefs that have shaped the city's history.

This visit to Wat Chedi Luang marks my second encounter with this remarkable historical landmark.

We met up with two of my brother's new friends in the evening to have dinner at Gu Roti Nimmanha. We took a Grab Car from the hotel, which cost 59 baht. We were all hungry, so we ordered a large set of food.

Waking up early, we walked to the morning market. When in Chiang Mai, you must eat at this restaurant. The line was long, and today, we could only eat at the restaurant (as the owner told us). **The Leis Rot Restaurant** is a must-try, as recommended by locals.

Fried Egg with Assorted Toppings

ไข่กระทะทรงเครื่อง is a popular Thai breakfast dish consisting of a fried egg served in a small pan with a variety of toppings.

ทรงเครื่อง translates to "with assorted toppings," indicating the dish's customizable nature.

Common toppings include:

  • Minced pork
  • Chinese sausage
  • Shrimp
  • Tomatoes
  • Onions
  • Chilis
  • Coriander
  • Fried shallots

The egg is typically fried sunny-side up, allowing the yolk to mix with the toppings for a richer flavor.

ไข่กระทะทรงเครื่อง is often served with a side of steamed rice and a dipping sauce, such as Sriracha or sweet chili sauce.

After finishing their meal, they walked towards Tha Pae Gate, taking in the sights of the temples along the way. They stopped at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep and then visited Sailomjoy Thai Restaurant for a coffee. Although they weren't particularly hungry, they couldn't resist ordering a coffee, which cost 50 baht, with an additional 25 baht for latte art. They ordered it mainly for the photo opportunity and ended up feeling quite caffeinated.

It's time to return to reality. Before heading back to Bangkok, we took a red songthaew to Kad Luang. We told the driver "Kad Luang, saw baht" (pretending to be locals). Tourists are usually charged 30 baht. We stopped by Kad Luang before checking out to buy souvenirs. If you visit Kad Luang, don't forget to try the delicious and flavorful sai oua at Sri Pann Restaurant. You can also find other local delicacies like kap moo, nam phrik num, and naem mo. As the locals say, "Remember, happiness is found during the journey, not at the destination." Please like and share our page trip2getherwithmary.
