Travel log 25-08-61

Following the concept of traveling on a budget (transportation) not exceeding 100 baht per trip, we made arrangements with friends at the beginning of August. We searched Google extensively for a suitable location for taking photos, with the specific goal of capturing nature-themed images. We considered Ayutthaya, Nakhon Pathom, and Khao Yai, but ultimately had to abandon these options due to exceeding our budget.

A Boat Trip to Lhong 1919

Seeking a budget-friendly and easily accessible destination within Bangkok, we opted for a boat trip. Having explored numerous landmarks by water, including Wat Arun, Wat Phra Kaew, Talad Noi, and Phutthamonthon Bridge, we decided to indulge a friend's request to visit Lhong 1919. This historic riverside community, once a bustling trade hub, has been transformed into a vibrant cultural and lifestyle destination.

For the journey... for us...

  • Starting at Nonthaburi Pier (as usual), the boat fare is 15 baht. Take a long ride to Ratchawong Pier (it takes more than an hour). Enjoy the ride.
  • Then walk across the river to Dindaeng Pier, 3.50 baht per person. After this, it will be a bit difficult. For the journey, we chose to take a taxi to Lhong 1919, which cost 35 baht.
  • Then we arrived at our destination in a few minutes.

At first glance, I was immediately captivated by Lhong 1919. The atmosphere was serene, and the crowd was sparse (at least during my visit). What truly caught my eye was the restroom. It was immaculate, with air conditioning, cleanliness, and a cleaning staff that diligently maintained its pristine condition every five minutes. I spent nearly an hour in there, simply enjoying the ambiance.

In our opinion, the Long is distinguished by its Chinese-style beauty. The red color contrasts with the wooden structure, making the place stand out. The space is well-organized, with the walls decorated with murals. From the entrance, a painting of a woman in a yellow Chinese dress is juxtaposed with the red characters "Long".

Another striking feature is a large-scale ink-brush painting of a Chinese woman, which stands out against the white wall. This iconic image has become a popular photo spot for visitors, adding to the unique character of the location.

A striking image of two blue birds adorns the weathered wall of the building, creating a harmonious contrast.

Every nook and cranny of the Lhong area exudes charm. Walking deeper into the alleyways, you'll discover another world. To be honest, it's incredibly cool. The murals on the walls depict a mischievous young boy peeking through a window, eliciting smiles from all who see it. The murals extend, seamlessly narrating the story of Chinese culture. Opposite, a wall is designed with plants and grass interspersed between the bricks and windows, creating another kind of beauty.

While the selection of restaurants is limited, with few options available, there is one noteworthy cafe offering decent coffee at an affordable price. As evening approaches, shoppers' eyes light up with excitement as a variety of shops selling leather goods, clothing, and perfumes open their doors, inviting exploration.

The second floor houses the shrine of Mazu, the goddess of the sea, which has been enshrined alongside the pier of the Huay Chung Leng since its founding in 1850. Mazu is revered as a sacred deity and the spiritual center of the Chinese community in Thailand. To this day, devotees continue to visit the shrine to pay their respects and seek blessings for a prosperous and fulfilling life.

This is another place that we secretly fell in love with without realizing it. Because normally, we are not very fond of artificial places. But for Leng, we were surprised that we fell in love with it without realizing it. If you have the chance to visit Leng, you will fall in love with it just like us.

For the return trip, we walked to the entrance and waited for a tuk-tuk to take us to the Din Daeng pier for no more than 30 baht. We then took a ferry across the river back to the Rajavong Pier and continued our journey back to Nonthaburi.

Navigate to Long without getting lost.
